유치반 (yoochi-ban)

Yoochi class is for children ages 5 and up to cultivate interest in Korean/Korean culture through various activities and play.

Each class focuses on one consonant, incorporating it into activities tailored for the age group that gets the students accustomed to the shape and sound of the consonant. Students learn the basics of writing through activities that work on fine motor skills and learn how to converse in Korean with by speaking with their peers. These activities work together to foster love for Korean culture and a sense of Korean identity.


우리반 (woori-ban)

Woori class is for students grade 1 and up to learn the basics of Korean. There is a focus on learning the name and sound associated with each Korean character and how to write them. Students focus on simple characters and sentences through writing short phrases, listening to stories and other various activities to get used to the Korean language.

This class covers:

  • the 10 basic vowels and 14 consonants, focusing on simple characters that end with a vowel and creating short sentences with them.
  • working on basic vocabulary related to the topic through listening
  • speaking respectfully, and encouraging students to speak confidently 
  • reading short storybooks and other various content to foster interest in Korean

나라반 (nara-ban)

Nara class is for students grade 1 and up that know how to read characters that end with consonants. Nara class focuses on achieving ease with consonant-end characters and double consonants to master reading and writing. The class focuses on reading storybooks, writing journal entries, and various listening, speaking, reading, writing tasks to further grow their language skills.

This class covers:

  • understanding, reading, and writing consonant-end and double consonant characters 
  • reading simple sentences aloud with speed
  • working to express their own thoughts aloud
  • reading short stories and writing journal entries to expand vocabulary and work on grammar
  • learning of Korean holidays and anniversaries, fostering understanding of Korean culture 

만세반 (mansae-ban)

Mansae class focuses on vocabulary and grammatical expressions related to a topic or situation within the textbook. Students are guided to develop listening, reading, writing and speaking using said vocabulary and expressions. Mansae class also focuses on laying down the foundation to give students independence in reading paragraphs or storybooks or writing short texts. In addition to Korean holidays and anniversaries, proverbs and Korean etiquette is covered as well.

This class covers:

  • using vocabulary and grammatical expressions according to a topic and/or situation
  • learning vocabulary with double consonants, double vowels, and complex final consonants
  • listening and reading paragraph-level texts
  • confidently expressing one’s own thoughts with more specific vocabulary
  • expressing one’s own thoughts through short writing
  • to read a storybook by oneself and to express thoughts on said story using various methods
  • understanding the meaning of Korean holidays, anniversaries, proverbs, and etiquette

무궁반 (mugoong-ban)

Mugoong class focuses on accurately expressing one’s thoughts and opinions in writing and speaking through the help of useful expressions (such as common conjunctions, four-character idioms, and proverbs). Various forms of writing are touched on to develop creating abilities (poetry, letters, emails, book reports). Different video medias are shown about Korean society and culture to establish Korean identity and foster understanding of the history and modern events of Korea. For online classes of this level, interest is cultivated through the use of various education apps.

This class covers:

  • creating rich sentences using conjunctions, four-character idioms, and proverbs
  • practicing typing in Korean, creating documents, and sending emails (online class only)
  • writing a logical short text using appropriate tenses and grammar for a given topic or situation
  • reciting and writing poetry to cultivate imagination and understanding implicit expressions
  • reading a Korean storybook and writing a reflection expressing one’s thoughts and emotions (book report)
  • improving vocabulary and learning various Korean expressions to help with conversing confidently in Korean

태극반 (taeguk-ban)

Taeguk class is the beginning of the advanced class. Through King Sejeong and the creation of Hangul, Korean history and the ease of Hangul is taught. Creative expressions are touched on for proficiency in writing. Various short stories and traditional fairy tales are covered to learn about Korean culture. Games and activities are used to interactively learn of Korea’s traditional history and culture, fostering interest in history, ethnicity, and identity.

This class covers:

  • correctly learning Korean typing through practice
  • making reading habitual through traditional and short stories
  • taking in vocabulary through the topic and situation
  • training to speak long sentences using proper grammar
  • training to write short texts on various topics (poetry, letters, etc.)
  • training to speak on various topics through one-minute speeches
  • history and culture through videos and various other online learning methods
  • Hangul typing practice

세종반 (sejeong-ban)

Sejeong is the intermediate(中) advanced class. This class focuses on language etiquette to develop the ability to have creative conversations on various topics. Using the textbook as a base, various content is woven together with Korean culture to help with student engagement. Students also partake in writing activities such as gratitude journals, letters, and explanatory texts through the correct use of spelling and grammar.

This class covers:

  • improving writing skills to explain one’s thoughts with correct grammar and spelling
  • acquiring basic language etiquette and improving Korean conversation skills in various situations
  • improving natural expressions and skills through textbook vocabulary, grammatical expressions, and understanding Korea’s seasons, figures, historical stories, etc.

통일반 (tongil-ban)

Tongil class is the highest(最) level class. This class focuses on cultivating the ability to read books on various topic and have discussions and debates about said topics. Pictures, photos, and audiovisual materials are used to learn Korean culture and history. Culture-centered language is focused on to help understand and utilize various areas and situations of Korean culture though the curriculum.

This class covers:

  • improving and balancing abilities in the four major areas of language (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
  • improving the ability to explain, describe, debate, and discuss specific topics using only Korean
  • comparing and understanding mother culture and new culture based on textbook content

When the set achievement standards are achieved, a diploma is awarded with an education certificate from the SAHLA Association.
